Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu aka “JAGABAN” has been declared the winner of Nigeria’s Presidential Election
Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu,The 70-year-old veteran politician got 37% of the vote according to the official results shown.
His main opponent Atiku Abubakar got 29%, and Peter Obi Labour Party Candidate Polled 25%. Their parties had earlier dismissed the poll as a sham, and request for a rerun.
Jagaban who is one of Nigeria’s richest politicians, based his campaign on his record of rebuilding the biggest city in Nigeria, Lagos, when he was the governor.
Nonetheless,he was defeated in the city by Peter Obi,who mobilised the support of many young citizens, especially in urban areas, shaking up the country’s two-party system despite being a relative newcomer.
Tinubu known as a “political godfather” won most other states in his home region of the south-west. He campaigned for the presidency under the slogan: “It’s my turn”.
Bola Ahmed Tinubu called for reconciliation with his opponents in his acceptance speech.
He said in a televised speech to the nation “I take this opportunity to appeal to my fellow contestants to let us team up together,it is the only nation we have. It is one country and we must build it together,”
Tinubu said that they had the right to challenge the results in court but the lapses in the election were relatively few in number and were immaterial to affect the outcome of this election.
After two terms in office, President Muhammad Buhari is stepping down, and leaving the seat to economic stagnation and growing insecurity around the country – from an Islamist insurgency in the north-east to a nationwide crisis of kidnapping for ransom.
Bola Ahmed Tinubu now has the task of solving these problems, among others, in Nigeria which is the biggest oil exporter and Africa’s most populous Nation.
Bola Ahmed Tinubu will feel that he was destined to become president After fighting military rule in Nigeria, escaping into exile and being one of the founding members of the country’s democracy in year 1999.
Tinubu surmounted hurdles to get here and it makes this more interesting win for him.He was always the favourite to replace President Buhari whom he helped become president.
It was an unexpected occurrence to win the Political primary election because many said his choice to run with a Muslim would cause an obstacle, but they were wrong.
He will now have to prove that he can hit the ground running and he is still the same strong force who modernized Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial hub.
As the election results shows, Jagaban will now be looking at unifying a Nation that is retreating into regional lines and religious blocs.
